Kay Sutten’s Legacy in Laker Hockey and Beyond

Kay Sutten wore many hats throughout her years with Laker Hockey—serving as secretary, coordinator, director, scheduler, and the dedicated publisher of the Blue Line Newsletter. Among her many contributions, her most groundbreaking accomplishment was founding South Dakota’s first girls’ hockey team during the 1994–1995 season, making Watertown the home of the state’s inaugural girls’ team.

Her involvement with Laker Hockey spanned decades, beginning when her children were young and continuing through their graduation. In 2021, Kay took on a new role as a founding member of the Watertown Laker Foundation Board. She was passionate about seeing the Foundation grow and provide support to families in the Laker community. Even as a grandmother, she remained actively engaged, proudly cheering on her grandchildren—eight of whom have played or are currently playing for the Lakers.

Kay was known for her kind heart, unwavering loyalty, and radiant positivity. She lived to serve others, often putting their needs ahead of her own, even if it meant rearranging her own plans. She was a caregiver, a devoted follower of Christ, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

In July 2024, Kay was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and sadly, she passed away just a few months later in October. Though her time was cut short, Kay lived a full, joyful, and faith-filled life. Her greatest mission was to ensure that her family—and everyone she encountered—knew Christ, so that one day, we may all be reunited.
